How are the Ballon d'Or awards decided?

The Ballon d'Or is awarded based on three main criteria:

1) Individual performances, decisive and impressive character
2) Team performances and achievements
3) Class and fair play

The Ballon d'Or is decided by an international jury of specialized journalists, with one representative per country from the top 100 nations in the latest FIFA rankings for men and the top 50 for women (before the release of the shortlists).

Each juror ranks ten players in order of merit from a pool of 30 nominees, which is determined by the editorial teams of France Football and L'Équipe, the top juror from the previous edition (Costa Rica for the men's Ballon d'Or, South Africa for the women's), and UEFA ambassadors Luís Figo for the men's award and Nadine Kessler for the women's.

The selected players are awarded points in the following order: 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. The player with the most points wins the Ballon d'Or. In a tie, the number of first-place votes serves as the tiebreaker, followed by second-place votes, third-place votes, and so on.

Do players get to keep their Ballon d'Or trophies?

A new trophy is created each year for every Ballon d'Or category, and all winners keep their trophies. As a result, and considering that Diego Maradona and Pelé received honorary Ballon d'Or awards for their entire careers (as they were ineligible during their playing years), there are theoretically 69 official Ballon d'Or trophies, five Women's Ballon d'Or trophies, five Kopa Trophies, five Yashin Trophies, two Gerd Müller Trophies, and two Socrates Awards in circulation worldwide. Additionally, all laureates have the option to request official replicas of their trophies.

France Football also keeps two original Ballon d'Or trophies in its offices for exhibition purposes.

When did UEFA become involved with the Ballon d'Or?

On November 3, 2023, UEFA and Groupe Amaury, owner of France Football and L'Équipe, announced a partnership to co-organize the Ballon d'Or® starting in 2024. This collaboration aims to elevate the prestige and global reach of the awards while promoting unity and cooperation within the football community.

Under the agreement, Groupe Amaury retains ownership of the Ballon d'Or® brand and continues to oversee the voting system, which remains unchanged and independent. UEFA brings its football expertise, handles global commercial rights, and organizes the annual awards ceremony.

Additionally, two new awards have been introduced: a Men's and Women's Coach of the Year, honoring coaches' vital role in achieving success on the pitch.
