Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically shot and killed in New York City on Wednesday morning.

The 50-year-old executive was struck in the chest just before 7:00 a.m. EST (12:00 p.m. GMT) outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. He was scheduled to speak at an investor conference at the venue later that day.

Emergency responders rushed Thompson to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to officials.

The suspect fled the scene and is currently at large, the New York Police Department reported.

Police believe Thompson was specifically targeted in the attack, as the suspect was seen waiting for him outside, wearing a ski mask and a cream-colored jacket.

Investigators confirmed they have video footage of the shooting but have not determined the suspect's motive. They added that nothing was stolen from Thompson during the incident.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the shooting as a "horrific and targeted" attack, adding that she had been briefed by police.

"I have directed the State Police to assist the NYPD in any way necessary to ensure the safety of all New Yorkers," Hochul said in a statement. "Our hearts are with Mr. Thompson's family and loved ones, and we are committed to ensuring the perpetrator is brought to justice."

Brian Thompson became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021, earning $10.2 million (£8 million) in the role last year. He joined the company in 2004 and held multiple leadership positions, including CEO of its government programs division.

UnitedHealthcare, the largest private insurer in the U.S., is part of UnitedHealth Group, which canceled its investor conference following the tragedy, according to U.S. media.

"We're dealing with a very serious medical situation," UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty stated at the event.

The Hilton Hotel, outside which the incident occurred, expressed condolences in a statement: "We are deeply saddened by this morning's events and extend our thoughts to all affected by the tragedy."
