Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of India's Tata Group, passed away at the age of 86 after a prolonged illness. He had been hospitalized due to age-related health issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the passing of Ratan Tata, praising him as a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being.

"Shri Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader, a kind-hearted soul, and an exceptional human being."

"He provided steady leadership to one of India's oldest and most prestigious business houses, yet his impact extended far beyond the boardroom. His humility, kindness, and unwavering dedication to improving society endeared him to countless people," PM Modi said in a post on X.

"One of the most remarkable qualities of Shri Ratan Tata Ji was his passion for dreaming big and giving back. He was a leading advocate for causes such as education, healthcare, sanitation, and animal welfare, among others," he added.




Ratan Tata's legacy

Ratan Tata, renowned for his philanthropy, served as chairman of the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012. During his tenure, he made substantial contributions to the conglomerate, which was founded by his great-grandfather over a century ago.

In 1996, Tata founded Tata Teleservices, the group's telecommunications division, and in 2004, he oversaw the initial public offering of Tata Consultancy Services, the group's IT company.

After stepping down as chairman in 2012, Tata retained the honorary title of Chairman Emeritus at several Tata companies, including Tata Sons, Tata Industries, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, and Tata Chemicals.

He led the Tata Trusts, which played a pivotal role in shaping India's philanthropic efforts. In recognition of his contributions to industry, Tata was honored with two of the nation’s highest civilian awards: the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

In addition to his business accomplishments, Tata was renowned for his support of entrepreneurship. He invested in over 30 startups across diverse sectors, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the Indian startup ecosystem. Ratan Tata's legacy extends well beyond the Tata Group; his vision and leadership have profoundly influenced the Indian business landscape and inspired a new generation of entrepreneurs.
