New York  On the second Monday of October, Americans will observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day, also known as Columbus Day.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the history, culture, and contributions of Native peoples who lived on this land long before Christopher Columbus mistakenly claimed to have discovered America. In 2021, President Joe Biden officially recognized the holiday with a proclamation acknowledging that federal policies once aimed to assimilate, displace, and erase Native cultures.

While some states formally observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day, others mark the occasion with proclamations. Over 100 cities have replaced Columbus Day entirely with this holiday.

Many schools across the country will close, though some will remain open. Similarly, some workers will have the day off, while others may still have to work. For those running errands, here's a guide to what's open and closed on Monday, October 14.

Banks

Monday is a Federal Reserve bank holiday, but the stock markets, including the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange, will remain open for trading.

Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citibank branches will be closed among major U.S. banks.

Chase Bank and TD Bank, however, will be open on Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

As usual, online banking and ATM services will be available.

Mail

The United States Postal Service will be closed, and there will be no mail or package deliveries.

However, if you need to send something, UPS and FedEx will largely operate as usual. FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy will offer modified services, while UPS will be fully operational.

Retail

Most major retailers will be open, including Target, Walmart, and Kroger. Be sure to check with local businesses for their specific hours of operation.

Government institutions

As a government holiday, most government buildings—including the DMV, libraries, courts, and offices—will be closed.
