President-elect Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America."
During a January press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump announced the decision, citing concerns about cartel activity in the region and asserting U.S. sovereignty over the gulf. "We’re going to rename it the Gulf of America—it’s a beautiful name that reflects the scope of our country," Trump said. "It’s appropriate. Mexico needs to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country."
While presidents can rename geographic regions and features, such changes must be formalized through an executive order.

The Gulf of Mexico, one of North America's largest and most vital bodies of water, spans approximately 600,000 square miles, making it the ninth-largest globally.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Gulf hosts half of the United States' petroleum refining and natural gas processing capacity. Additionally, as reported by the Environmental Defense Fund, it supplies about 40% of the nation’s seafood.
